Johnstown Generals Hockey Team holds first game of the year Saturday

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A local hockey team made up of veterans held their first game of the year Saturday morning. The Johnstown Generals played against the Philadelphia Warriors at the Cambria County War Memorial. Steve Carlson, one of the famed Hanson Brothers, was there to speak to fans and players. John Kovac, President of the Johnstown Generals, says these games help to keep the mental health of these veterans in check.

New carrier at DuBois Regional Airport to help keep essential air service

REYNOLDSVILLE - In May, the Department of Transportation recommended six airports in Pennsylvania lose their Essential Air Service. That list included airports in Cambria, Blair and Jefferson counties. Monday, the DOT made that decision final. These airports will lose their EAS in 30 days unless they petition for a waiver. EAS is how the government pays to keep passenger flights going to small airports. DOT is eliminating EAS at airports because it either did not enplane an average of 10 or more passengers per day and/or the subsidy rate per passenger exceeded $200.

Baltimore bridge collapses after cargo ship hits; search for 6 presumed dead now recovery

BALTIMORE (TND) — The search for the six people missing after Tuesday morning's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore is over. It was replaced with a new recovery phase as of 7:30 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard announced. The change was based on the amount of time those people would've been in the cold water, and doubts they will be found alive. There are also concerns about the safety of first responders, considering the amount of bridge structure debris in the water.

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Our coverage on tractor pulling safety continues as we spoke with a driver and saw how they make sure it’s as safe as possible. We were able to see everything from the protective equipment that the drivers wear, to the different parts of the tractor. We also learned about what guidelines are in place for these events. Tractor pulling is going on at many of the fairs in the commonwealth and with big machines comes big risks, but local puller Steve Mundrick says it’s safer than a lot of other competitions.

Johnstown water authority announces $2 sewer fee decrease for customers

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — The Greater Johnstown Water Authority announced late Thursday that, effective Jan. 1 of 2022, customers will receive a $2 sewer maintenance fee decrease on their bill, according to a press release. Currently, customers are charged $55 per month for sewer maintenance. Officials say this decreased rate will remain in effect for four years, and was made possible by an agreement to allow the water authority to purchase the city's clean fill dump site.

Judge dismisses legal challenge of improperly dated mail-in ballots in Centre County

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — A Centre County judge has dismissed a challenge on whether close to 100 mail-in ballots, from last month’s primary election, should be counted as valid votes. Judge Julia Rater has ruled the appeal not to count the ballots was filed too late. The group challenging the 95 ballots claimed they weren't valid due to problems with how they were dated, or not dated, and that didn't follow the state's guidelines for mail-in ballots.

Rescue kitten Tater Tot becomes internet superstar while on road to recovery

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A stray Utah kitten with special needs has become the star of a Facebook group dedicated unamused cats - and is capturing hearts across the world. Ash Houghton is Tater Tot's foster mom, and she said she had no idea how much attention he'd get when his photo was added to the THIS CAT IS G R O M P Y page. Authorities ID gunman who opened fire on Pittsburgh police during eviction notice

2nd UPDATE |Pittsburgh — A suspect is dead after a shootout with seven deputies in a Pittsburgh neighborhood Wednesday afternoon. Officials say that William Hardison Sr. was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m., nearly seven hours after an intense gun battle started while deputies were serving a court ordered eviction notice. Witnesses say they heard hundreds of gunshots. One deputy was injured while trying to take cover while the suspect was shooting.
