Jackson Township residents showed up in force Monday evening to the Central Cambria School District board meeting in hopes of saving the Jackson Elementary School. It was recently reported that the school board is moving forward with a feasibility study to determine whether merging its elementary schools into one building would benefit the district. This comes as the district and its residents are facing a multi-million-dollar tax bill after the CPV powerplant was overvalued by nearly 5-times what it's worth, directly affecting taxes in the area.

FedEx warns of text message scams claiming to have package information

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Several police departments are warning the public about a new text message phishing scam that looks to be from FedEx about a package delivery. FedEx said customers around the country have gotten a text message that shows you a "tracking code" and asks you to click it to set delivery preferences. The company said the link would take you to a fraudulent, scammer-operated site that would try to steal your personal information and money.

Philadelphia medical museum receives 'donation' of human fetuses; police investigating

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) — In Philadelphia, a medical history museum is wondering who sent them a package that appeared to have two preserved fetuses inside. The museum received the package on Tuesday and now police are investigating. "I’ve been here for almost twenty years, and I don't recall a situation like this,” said the museum’s curator, Anna Dhody. Dhody says she has seen a lot in her time as the curator of the Mutter Museum, an institution that showcases medical history, and has more than 20-thousand unusual specimens.

PNG releases preliminary cause of gas leak that led to deadly house explosion in Tyrone

TYRONE, Pa. (WJAC) — Following their preliminary investigation, Peoples Natural Gas says they believe they know what caused a deadly house explosion in Tyrone last month. Peoples Spokesperson Barry Kukovich says the company has been led to believe that the gas leak was caused by a pipeline being struck by a horizontal drill operated by a contractor working on a water project. “Our preliminary investigation leads us to believe that the gas leak on July 26th in Tyrone, Pennsylvania was due to our pipeline being struck by a horizontal drill operated by a contractor working on a water project,” Kukovich said in a statement emailed to 6 News.

Somerset ranks among worst for broadband availability, hurting local businesses

BROTHERSVALLEY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — It took a golf cart ride to the end of his driveway and a 15-minute explanation for Mark Knepper, owner of Kneppco Equipment in Somerset County, to explain to a 6 News reporter how he gets his internet. Instead of a fiber optic cable, Knepper gets sub-broadband internet from a blue and white transceiver perched in an evergreen tree near the road that receives an internet signal from a tower somewhere off in the distance.

Bellwood man charged with kidnapping and assault, state police say

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — State police say a Bellwood man was charged Monday with multiple misdemeanors and felonies including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping following a domestic dispute which occurred Friday night. According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Pennsylvania State Police, 34-year-old Brett Eugene Gates contacted the victim and requested to come to her residence because he was homeless and it was cold. At the time of the incident, troopers say the victim was protected by an active Protection from Abuse (PFA) order against Gates who is currently on probation for a previous PFA violation and has multiple past violations.

Elk County manufacturing companies looking for workers

ST. MARYS - An industrial committee under the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce held a meeting Wednesday to address the employee shortage in Elk County. Committee chairman Lance Mohney said every employer has the same problem. They need workers. Mohney said the committee started in January after the chamber took on a lot of new members. He said they started kicking around ideas on how to help the community thrive, specifically manufacturing.

Macy's to close stores in State College, Harrisburg

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WJAC) — Macy's has decided to close two of its Pennsylvania stores, according to a company spokesperson. Macy's Director of Media Relations Carolyn Cohen said Monday the department store chain decided to close Macy's Nittany Store in State College and the Macy's Harrisburg East Mall store in Harrisburg. Cohen says a clearance sale will begin in January and run for about 8 to 12 weeks. Regular and non-seasonal employees who are unable to be placed at a nearby Macy's store will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources, Cohen said.
