NHL announces playoff schedule; Penguins to host Game 1 vs Islanders on Sunday

Pittsburgh, Pa (WJAC) — The NHL has officially announced the 2021 playoff schedule and the Pittsburgh Penguins now know when they will begin their first round series against the New York Islanders. Puck drop for Game 1 between the Pens and Isles is scheduled for noon on Sunday, May 16th. Games 2 and 3 will be Tuesday and Thursday night respectively, with Game 4 to be played Saturday afternoon, May 22nd.

Osceola Mills celebrates milestone anniversary with annual fireman's parade, fair

Osceola Mills, PA (WJAC) — The Columbia Fire Company in Osceola Mills is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and, on Monday, they celebrated with a firemen's parade. PC Friars guard Devin Carter declaring for NBA Draft

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — Friars guard Devin Carter announced on social media Wednesday that he will forego his senior season at Providence College and enter the 2024 NBA Draft. Carter had an impressive junior season in Providence, culminating in Big East Player of the Year honors. Carter averaged 19.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3. 6 assists per game. He also led the conference in scoring. The NBA Draft begins June 26 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Red Mill Road Bridge in Cambria County to be replaced after years-long closure

BLACKLICK TWP, Pa. (WJAC) — A bridge in Cambria County that has been closed for more than 10 years could soon be replaced. Cambria County Commissioner Tom Chernisky says the Red Mill Road Bridge in Blacklick Township has been ignored for years. It was one of the county's 10 bridges that were designated as structurally deficient in 2016. The executive director for the Cambria County Planning Commission says it is now the very last project to be completed.

'Making history:' Mount Aloysius becomes first PA college to create an NCAA rifle team

Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Mount Aloysius is adding a rifle team and they'll be the only college in Pennsylvania to have one. In the fall, Mount Aloysius will become just one of seventeen colleges with a rifle team, and they will compete against Division One schools like Ohio State and West Virginia. "I could never dream of this happening one day, so I’m blessed to be here, blessed to be the first head coach of the Mountain rifle team,” said head coach Siarra Crum.

America's first Black astronaut candidate, finally goes to space 60 years later

VAN HORN, Texas (AP) — Ed Dwight, America's first Black astronaut candidate, finally rocketed into space 60 years later, flying with Jeff Bezos' rocket company on Sunday. Dwight was an Air Force pilot when President John F. Kennedy championed him as a candidate for NASA's early astronaut corps. But he wasn't picked for the 1963 class. Dwight, now 90, went through a few minutes of weightlessness with five other passengers aboard the Blue Origin capsule as it skimmed space on a roughly 10-minute flight.

Johnstown Symphony Orchestra puts on annual July Fourth concert for thousands

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) -- The rain held off Wednesday night and thousands of people packed into Point Stadium for some great music and fireworks to cap off the night. It's the biggest Fourth of July celebration in Johnstown. "Do you guys want any flags?" asked Tessia Robison, as people walked through the main entrance. Members of the Johnstown Youth Symphony Orchestra were tasked with handing out flags, as thousands of people settlesettled into the stands.

Lawsuit filed against Diocese of Greensburg alleges years of abuse, orgies involving minor

GREENSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — A lawsuit filed against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg in western Pennsylvania alleges that a former priest raped and sexually abused a minor for nearly six years. The 25-page complaint was first filed on June 5 by attorneys Richard Serbin and Andrew Janet on behalf of the victim. The lawsuit was officially confirmed for filing pseudonymously on June 22.
