Safeway removes self-checkout at Bay Area stores following shoplifting spike

OAKLAND, Calif. (TND) — Safeway has removed self-checkout machines at several stores in the San Francisco Bay Area following a rise in theft, according to KRON. The supermarket chain is reportedly removing the machines to crack down on shoplifting. Man killed in crash in Gulich Township

GULICH TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WJAC) — Authorities said one person died Tuesday night in a crash in Gulich Township. According to state police, 22-year-old Seth Gallaher was driving on Union Street when he veered off the road and overturned several times. Police said Gallaher was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car. He was the only person in the car. Police believe Gallaher was speeding prior to the crash.

Married LGBTQ leaders were taking car for repairs before arrest in PA traffic stop

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The married LGBTQ leaders arrested during a contentious traffic stop in Philadelphia were driving separately to take a car for repairs when a trooper pulled one of them over, their lawyer said Tuesday. Celena Morrison, who leads the city's Office of LGBT Affairs and is a top aide to Mayor Cherelle Parker, and her husband were detained Saturday for about 12 hours following the 9 a.m. highway stop.

Clearfield County man charged in teen's overdose death

A Clearfield County man is facing charges for allegedly supplying drugs to a teenager who overdosed and died. On Aug. 3, 2022, the 14-year-old boy was pronounced dead at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. According to a probable-cause affidavit, the boy was a co-worker and friend of 36-year-old Dennis Demoss, of Munson. According to the affidavit, on July 28, 2022, Demoss supplied the boy with fentanyl, and the teen overdosed at Demoss’ Hardscrabble Road home.

Grange Fair continues to serve as fundraising opportunity for area nonprofits

Harvard rules to no longer speak on issues 'outside its core function'

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (TND) — Harvard University announced Tuesday it will no longer comment on “issues outside its core function,” citing a desire to not become “a government.” The decision follows a report by two university working groups which examined the impact of statements by Harvard and other universities. Working group chairs say they concluded Harvard should refrain from speaking out on an issue that does not affect its operations directly.
