Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — You, like those of us here at the station, might have heard some unexplained noises outside. Then, when you might have gone out to look, you found nothing to explain the booms and vibrations. Well, it’s a winter phenomenon called frost quakes which are happening all over the region. When asked, some residents knew what a frost quake was, while others laughed and thought it was a joke.

12 people charged in $87 million health care fraud conspiracy

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WJAC) — Twelve people, including 10 from western Pennsylvania, have been charged in an alleged extensive health care fraud conspiracy, according to a release from the U.S attorney’s office. The release said 10 individuals from Pennsylvania, a resident from Georgia and a resident from South Carolina are facing charges related to a yearslong conspiracy to defraud the Pennsylvania Medicaid program. Arlinda Moriarty, Daynelle Dickens, Julie Wilson, Tamika Adams, Tony Brown, Terry Adams, Terra Dean, Tionne Street, Keith Scoggins and Larita Walls, all living in and around Pittsburgh, along with Larita Walls, of South Carolina, and Luis Columbie-Abrew, of Georgia, are charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

Bedford community hopes to save St. Thomas School

BEDFORD, Pa. (WJAC) -- Community members and business owners want St. Thomas The Apostle School to stay open. St. Thomas principal Amy Higgins announced in January that the doors will close at the end of the school year for good, after more than 52 years. According to the diocese, the school cannot afford to stay open under financial pressure and declining enrollment. It's difficult to miss the "Save St. Thomas School"

DuBois write-in candidates appear to unseat incumbents, updated results show

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — It appears write-in candidates in DuBois did something that rarely happens: beat the candidates already on the ballot. The elections office has released the unofficial results of the May 16 primary elections. And it is turning out to be a big win for write-in candidates. Douglas Braff spoke with the county elections director and one of the write-in candidates about the results. Dawn Graham, the director of elections and voter registration in Clearfield County, tells 6 News that while the results are unofficial, she expects little to no changes in the vote count by June 5.

First US bird flu patient shows respiratory symptoms, no signs of human-to-human spread

SAN ANTONIO (WOAI/KABB) — This week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that one personinfected with the bird flu now has acute respiratory symptoms. This is the first case in the U.S. with these types of symptoms but the third human case tied to the H5N1 outbreak. The second case is a dairy farm worker in Michigan and another is a farmworker in Texas. Federal health experts say the latest person with the virus had direct exposure to infected cattle.

PA Game Commission rescues elk trapped in telephone wire in Cameron County

Cameron County, PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Pennsylvania Game Commission had to free an elk in Cameron County earlier this week after the animal became entangled in a telephone wire. Wildlife officials say they were dispatched on Tuesday, Sept. 26, after receiving a call that the 6x6 bull elk was reportedly wrapped around a pine tree in Sinnemahoning, Cameron County. Officials say the bull was sedated as rescuers worked to cut the wire and free it from the elk's antlers.

Altoona man staged burglary, stole $2M from former relative

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Police say an Altoona man has been charged with stealing an estimated $2 million from a former relative. Police say last February, 29-year-old Andrew Booker reported that a safe containing the money was stolen from his 21st Avenue home during a burglary. Police determined that Booker staged the burglary and had spent more than one-hundred-forty-thousand dollars of the cash from May until August. Authorities note that much of the remainder of the money has yet to be recovered.

Bellefonte lacrosse team honors late teammate in emotional playoff game

SNYDER COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Just three days after one of their teammates passed away after drowning at Raystown Lake, the Bellefonte boys lacrosse team had a playoff game Thursday. While the Bellefonte boys lacrosse team lost here to Selinsgrove on Tuesday in their district playoff matchup, head coach Rick Johnson says he is so proud of this team, and how they’ve rallied around each other following the passing of their teammate, 16-year-old Nathan Dan, on Saturday.
