CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. — A Centre County man is facing multiple charges after reports of a dead horse on his property lead to the discovery of multiple other deceased animals as well as animals in poor living conditions Jan. 30, state police say. According to a criminal complaint, state police received a complaint of a deceased black Percheron mare laying in a muddy pasture for over a week. State police say a neighbor approached them and said that Levi Byler, 30, was out of town selling sheep and that he was going to bury the deceased horse.

Dogs rescued from Ohio home after viral video now in foster homes, up for adoption

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Dogs rescued from a home in Ohio due to abusive conditions are now learning what it's like to live in a loving home. One month ago, deputies raided the home and found 40 pit bulls after a witness reported the conditions. A video went viral of them outside, tethered to thick, heavy chains, with only the ability to walk in small circles around barrels. Now, the dogs are slowly but surely getting healthier, adjusting to walking on a leash, being around humans, and interacting with other dogs.

Maine man sentenced to 27 years for machete attack on New York officers

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — A Maine man who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges after trying to kill three New York City police officers with a machete was sentenced to 27 years in prison Thursday. In a statement, 20-year-old Trevor Bickford, of Wells, apologized and admitted he traveled near Times Square in on New Year's Eve in 2022 and attacked the officers. Prosecutors said Bickford specifically went after police officers with a machete and tried to grab one of their guns before getting shot in the shoulder.

Morrisdale man locked others out of home during alleged sexual assault of girl, 12

Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — State police in Clearfield County say a Morrisdale man is behind bars after being accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl, on four separate occasions, in the past eight months. Authorities say William Kempf, 32, facing multiple counts of indecent assault and corruption of minors, as well as one count of attempted aggravated indecent assault, according to online court records. Police say the investigation into Kempf began in late June when troopers were dispatched to a home in Graham Township for a report of a disturbance where they learned that he had allegedly assaulted the 12-year-old victim.

PSU unveils mural honoring late Steelers, Nittany Lions RB Franco Harris

University Park, PA (WJAC) — A mural dedicated to former Penn State and Steelers running back Franco Harris was unveiled at the Penn State Sports Museum on Sunday. The mural is made up of nearly 2,000 different pictures of Harris that were submitted by friends, family and fans. Harris passed away last December, at the age of 72. He is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, and his number 32 is one of three numbers that have been retired by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Crews battle large tire fire in Armstrong County

Pittsburgh (WPXI) — A tire fire in Pennsylvania’s Armstrong County sent heavy black smoke pouring into the air on Monday. Dispatchers say emergency crews were called to reports of a brush fire near a building in South Bend Township just after 4 p.m. Investigators could not confirm whether the fire had spread to the building and caused the situation. There are no reported injuries at this time. A pile of tires resting against the building appeared to be the main source of the smoke.

Employee accused of smuggling drugs into SCI Houtzdale appears in court

CLEARFIELD, Pa. — A state prison employee accused of bringing drugs into a Clearfield County facility appeared in court Wednesday. Rick Davis Jr., 36, of Philipsburg, was charged Saturday with felony manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, felony intentional possession of controlled substance, felony possession of controlled substance contraband/inmate and misdemeanor use/possession of drug paraphernalia. Davis waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday and had all charges bound over for trial.

New area code being added to 814 region, Public Utility Commission announces

A new area code is being added to the region currently covered by the 814 area code, state officials announced Thursday. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission says it voted 4-0 to approve a year-long implementation plan which will lead to the start of a new “overlay” for the current 814 area code. The new area code will be announced in the fall. The 814 area code currently covers all or parts of 27 counties across the Central and Northwestern parts of the state.
